The clean beauty revolution is well underway, and we’re all becoming more aware of what we put on our skin. But medical grade skincare has also exploded onto the market in recent years.
There is one luxury skincare line, made in Australia, that has quietly combined the principles of clean beauty with the clinical approach of medical grade skincare for a number of years. It’s quite possibly the most advanced skincare range you’ve never heard of.
The line is called RejuvAus and its goal is to provide “luxury medicine for healthy skin”. The range boasts combinations of active ingredients and no nasty, synthetic additives or fillers. We spoke with RejuvAus co-founder, Dr Garry Cussell, to discuss his inspiration for the line and the essential steps of a good skincare routine.
Dr Cussell and his wife, Nurse Robyn Cussell, established Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia in the year 2000. It’s a true family business with a holistic approach to cosmetic medicine and skincare. Dr Cussell says that they carried medical grade skincare products in their clinic but struggled to find one that contained the right mix of multiple active ingredients.
Dr Cussell says that he really wanted to produce something specifically for Australian skin that was effective, but without the risk of irritation that sometimes comes with high concentrations of active ingredients. Other brands have come out that offer multiple actives in each bottle, but they often come with synthetic additives and fillers.
RejuvAus claim that their ingredients are pure and natural. Even the product bases are made of organic essential oils and natural gel immersions with soothing plant extracts that double as anti-inflammatories for your skin.
Though the ingredients are natural, the approach is clinical. Dr Cussell refers to RejuvAus as a line of “skin medicines” rather than skin care products. “Everyone should be using an exfoliating serum, antioxidants and a strong physical sunscreen,” Dr Cussell insists.
His clinic also offers complimentary consultations so you can discuss which active ingredients are right for your skin type, or if you have specific concerns like acne, pigmentation or ageing. They’ll even fill out a skincare “prescription” at the back of their brochure that tells you what to use and how often.
There are three essential steps Dr Cussell recommends for any thorough skincare routine:
#1 Cleanse and Exfoliate
Cleansing is essential to remove makeup, dirt, oils and pollution that can block your pores or build up and irritate your skin. Exfoliation helps to promote cell turnover and remove dead skin cells so that your active ingredients can penetrate more deeply.
#2 Repair and Restore
After cleansing and exfoliating, it’s recommended to apply serums that contain vitamins, antioxidants, and other active ingredients. These provide nutrition to your skin and boost collagen production to preserve the health and youthful strength in your skin.
#3 Hydrate and Protect
Moisturisers shield and calm the skin, so it’s good to apply them after your serums. There is no purpose in doing anything for your skin if you don’t also protect it from harmful rays from the sun. You should apply a strong, physical sunscreen with moisturising properties after your skincare ritual every single day.
