Debunking Myths About Body Oil

“Good oils” have definitely worked their way into the language of health, beauty and lifestyle over the past couple of years. Managing everything from cleaning our teeth (!!), to moisturising our limbs and adding extra flavours to smoothies and meals, natural organic oils have developed a valued place in many people’s routines. But there remains a lot of myths about oils! Which are good? Which are “bad”?

I was excited to meet with Elle and Tamara, the two inspiring founders of ’10 & Co’, who have developed an organic, raw, vegan body oil company to help people feel like a ’10’ all year round. We sat down to debunk the myths around oil, once and for all… Here’s what you need to know:

Myth #1 – Oil will cause acne

Hands up if you think of oil – for both face and body – as a “no-no” unless you have very dry skin. It’s long been thought that unless your skin is in need of some serious repair, using oil is going to clog your pores and (potentially) cause acne.

But for most people, this is a myth – pure and simple! Because our skin types are all different, and because natural oils are all different, how they each impact on skin can differ dramatically.

Whereas some oils rebalance by mimicking sebum (the natural oil we produce in our bodies), some rehydrate, and others may help with hormonal balance…

Myth #2 – Oil will NOT balance my skin!

Fat loves fat and this also means our skin loves oil. Raw, organic oil helps to increase the amount of good fat in the lower layers of skin, helping it to be more hydrated, smooth and appear more youthful.

Pure oils from a plant source are rich in vitamins and antioxidants and contain some of the most powerful anti-aging ingredients we can find in nature.

By moisturising with natural oil you can actually help to balance the production of oil within your skin. As well as moisturising, they also contain ingredients that help kill bacteria, reduce breakouts and even soothe skin from sunburn. What a little powerhouse!

But, what should you look for when shopping for oil? How can you work out which is the right oil for you? First, identify one key factor that is important for 10 Oil – using a plant-based oil, not mineral.

Myth #3 – All oils are the same

Ah, NO… Let’s look at this: Mineral Oil for instance, is derived from petroleum. It is actually a by-product of petrol production! As a general rule, it will not nourish and rebalance your skin; it will treat the surface only, giving a smooth appearance but evaporating quickly requiring you to reapply over and over again.

We want to nourish our skin deep down into our cells, right? Natural oils extracted from a plant source are where we need to look to achieve this.

For example, 10 & Co use 8 different oils in their formulation. Each one has it’s own specific role to play as well as working with it’s ‘power pair’ to maintain one of their 4 key pillars of exceptional skin health – Hydrate. Nourish. Heal. Protect.

Key things to know about body oils from the experts:

1. It’s ALL about moisture – to receive maximum hydration, you need a body oil that absorbs quickly and deeply into your skin. (After all, who has the time to sit around for half an hour waiting for your oil to soak in!)

2. Look for organic oils such as coconut and sunflower oil, with a small molecular size for their oil, to absorb quickly and deeply and give you exceptional results.

3. Deeply moisturised skin that is hydrated, soft and smooth helps you feel like a ‘10’!
