getting employed around the world

#1 – Work fully remote

If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that a lot of jobs can be done completely remotely. Not everybody is keen to return to the office now that they’ve gotten used to working from home. And let’s face it, if you can work fully remote, why not change your living room for somewhere more exciting or exotic?

The advantages of working fully remotely is that you still get the benefits of being an employee, but you’re not tied down to a particular location. Be aware though, that whilst many companies allow you to work fully remote, they may not be open to you working outside of Australia.

#2 – Work online

Work online and travel around the world – that’s the definition of a digital nomad. Digital nomads travel from place to place while enjoying the local culture. Travelling can be expensive though, so they combine travel with working online.

By working fully online, you make yourself location independent. Digital nomads can work anywhere in the world, as long as there is a decent internet connection.

Don’t fall for the typical Instagram pictures of people with their laptop on a tropical beach. You’ll have more luck finding a digital nomad in a co-working space, a cafe with free WiFi, or at a desk in their hotel room or AirBnB.

Some digital nomads also depend on a large social media following to fund their travels. Travel YouTubers, Instagram influencers or travel bloggers earn money online while traveling and showing their followers what they are up to. #3 – Become a travel photographer or filmmaker

Becoming a travel photographer or filmmaker is also often associated with being a digital nomad. The difference is that a travel photographer or filmmaker isn’t dependent on a stable internet connection to work. The only thing they need is a camera and a good view or an interesting story. You can work as a travel photographer or filmmaker as an employee for a company or as a freelancer.

Sir David Attenborough might be the most famous example of a filmmaker who gets to travel around the world for his job. He’s the face of many well-loved BBC nature documentaries, but there are also dozens of other people working with him behind the scenes to make those documentaries a reality, such as videographers and sound people.

#4 – Apply for work visas around the world

What if your company doesn’t allow remote work, you have no interest in working online, and you don’t have the talent of becoming a travel photographer or filmmaker? Then it is STILL possible to get employed and travel around the world!

The simple fact is that you are not allowed to work on a tourist visa. If you want to travel the world and work at the same time, you’ll need a valid work visa, which usually require a job offer and a sponsor.

Australia also has an interesting Working Holiday Visa program. With this program, you are allowed to stay and work in Australia for up to 3 years. However, there are some limitations to the program, such as age and nationality. Don’t worry, if you don’t fit these criteria, there are other options for you.

Teaching English abroad is another popular way to get employed and to travel around the world. Depending on in which country you want to teach English in, you might need certain degrees or certifications. Furthermore, if your aspirations include Canada, you might consider exploring their working holiday visa Canada program, which can open up avenues for both teaching English and experiencing the beauty of the country.

A good way to start is getting your TEFL certification. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and you can get your certification in Australia if you want. For more information, check out this link to the teaching course in Australia
