How To Wear a Denim Jacket With Any Outfit

There’s rarely a time that I’ve looked at anything of mine and thought ‘Pippa Middleton has this too’. And unfortunately, it wasn’t when I was comparing my derriere next to her ‘Rear of the Year’. It was the humble denim jacket:  the icon of cool and casual style that is making a welcome comeback in perfect timing for spring.

From suffering with the rebels in the 60’s, enduring the perm epidemic of the 80’s, and probably having a lifelong fear of diamantes thanks to the 90’s’, it’s amazing that the denim jacket still remains in the modern fashion world. Infact, I think it looks pretty good for its age. And so do Dolce and Gabanna, Jean Paul Gautier, and Derek Lam, if their Spring/Summer 2011 Runway Collections are anything to go by.

While coloured denim may be the go-to for pants, it’s all about blue denim for the top half this season. But blue need not be boring, one-shade blue, proves this jacket, as it’s just as stylish when it’s lighter, darker, shorter, or longer.  Team one with a floral dress for relaxed, feminine elegance, like Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Richie, or pair with a maxi dress, like Miranda Kerr for a look that is effortlessly chic.

Throw a denim jacket over the top of your favourite t-shirt and jeans combo, and I guarantee you’ll love the result. The look is less officey than your much loved blazer, decidedly cooler than a cardigan, and by simply adding heels; this outfit can take you from your weekend brunch into the drinks and dancing. Even if you’re an adventurous dresser, don’t worry; the denim jacket can still work its magic for you. Just take a leaf out of Rihanna’s book, who’s managed to rock army pants and a statement haircut look; just by adding a little denim on top.

I don’t know, I don’t like to wear my denim jacket with sleeves. It’s not comfortable.

I love denim – it makes me think of Jimmie Dean. Some things never go out of style.
