Anyone who’s ever been involved in fashion will tell you not to underestimate the effects that choosing the right accessories can have on an outfit. As with any other element of your outfit, you need to be careful when selecting accessories, and there are a great many things to consider when selecting your jewellery.
1. Choose necklaces based on length, not just style
Just as prominent fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar has noted, there are different types of clothes that can compliment your body type. It’s not just about figuring out what kind of outfit to wear either, as different cuts of dresses and different fabrics can also have effects on the silhouette you’re trying to achieve.
Similarly, when it comes to selecting jewellery, the length of a necklace also matters. As jewellery expert Jewelry Wise explains, the length of a necklace should vary based on your outfit as well.
Here’s a chart they created to help you find the perfect length for you, based on the outfit you want to wear:
2. Choose Based on Overall Wardrobe Personality
While it’s generally a good idea to have something for every occasion, it’s always better to know what your style is, and to know how to stick with it. Not only will this allow you to shop for clothes better, it will also make choosing jewellery much easier.
The five wardrobe personalities are discussed and defined by fashion blog Fabrickated: Classic, Dramatic, Romantic, Natural, and Gamine; and you’re sure to find that there are several different styles of jewellery that will fit each wardrobe personality.
Those who have a classic wardrobe personality may find themselves more drawn towards items made in classic materials such as gold and silver, with diamonds as the primary stone.
Those going for a more natural look may prefer something from the Before Sunrise collection by Melissa Joy Manning, which is described by fashion aggregator Lyst as “Infused with rainbow moonstone, citrine, labradorite, topaz, agate and opal” creating a more natural look through its use of natural materials.
3. Choose Based on the Occasion
Accessorising is something we need to do, regardless of where we’re going and what we’re doing, but that doesn’t mean the occasion shouldn’t matter when we’re choosing how to accessorise.
As popular advice website WikiHow explains, “determine where you will be wearing these rings. For example, if you’re working around fine fabrics, you’ll not want any rings that have sharp edges that could snag.”
Similarly, if you think you will be moving around or dancing a lot or long necklaces and dangling earrings may snag, and could even hurt you. Always pay ample attention to the function of your jewellery.

When you’re choosing something you expect to be wearing constantly (like wedding or engagement rings), don’t just think about whether you like it by itself – also think about how well it will go with a variety of other accessories.
Mmm, good points!
