ByJohnny’s Spring Summer 13/14 collection felt to me like a coming out party, or rather a celebration of the evolution of the label into something more, a defining moment that tells the world this young man means business and that he has the goods to back it up. Plus, you can exclusively shop a capsule of the collection at The Iconic right here!
The buzz in the air that was lacking at other shows on Day One at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was electrifying. Part of it has to be attributed to Johnny’s obvious entourage of supportive friends of family, those that supported Johnny and sister Renee grow from an emerging talent to a small business to who knows what this year! But part of it was the excitement at seeing a serious talent present his latest offering.
This collection was by far the most grown up we have seen from Johnny, offering ladylike pencil skirts with feminine trumpets, sheer floating blouses, and statement dresses.
Johnny caught up with us backstage before the show, and filled us in on his inspiration, “the collection is inspired by Brigitte Riley and her use of repetition and structural elements. I played around with different shapes, I went into a bit of a pattern frenzy actually. Its all about puzzles, locked panel lines, shapes that push the print differently.”
The collection is clearly conscious about the woman and practicality. Something she might wear to work might not be appropriate for something she wants to wear to a wedding, but that doesn’t mean it can’t all come from the same collection with the same aesthetic. Says Johnny, “I like to do four different stories, and carry through different colours for different girls and different events that she would go to, moving from nudes to white to pastel pink to navy blue, then onto hardcore black white and yellow. It has been so much fun putting this together”
We also took a quick backstage peek at the beauty look which was briefed by Johnny, “The beauty look is a really chrome eye, a really wet look created by MAC which is complemented by a chrome nail by OPI. Redken are doing a dead straight diamond oil hair that will be floating down the catwalk!”.
