How To Store Beauty Products To Maximise Shelf Life

3. THE REFRIGERATOR

Long term cold exposure can be just as damaging on beauty products as long term heat exposure. However, there are some products that benefit from being left in the fridge, ie:

  • Organic & Prescriptions – Always read instructions/ask your doctor
  • Eye Cream – 3M to 6M
  • Sheet-Masks – 24hrs before use.

4. THE BIN

TIP # 1 – A good habit to get into is to Sharpie the date of purchase onto beauty products as soon as you get home. Why the date of purchase and not the day of opening? Not all products are properly sealed by the manufacturer or cared for in-store.

Remember, it’s entirely possible for a product to have destabilized in-packaging or to have been exposed to bacteria other microbes before opening so err on the side of caution, marker in the date of purchase and check for changes every time you use.

TIP # 2 – Be strict with prescription products, bin them as soon as they pass their use-by date. We also recommend doing the same with organic.

TIP #3 – With products featuring the PAO symbol, the bin-date is a little more flexible (within reason.)

Things to look out for are any changes in scent, look, colour, texture, packaging, or application; train your nose for scent, it’s always one of the first things to go.

TIP # 4Keep an eye on any products that claiming to be ‘all-natural’, ‘organic’ or ‘preservative-free’. These products may be holy-grail material but they are also generally more susceptible to bacterial and other microbial growths.

Finally, something to keep in mind when next you shop for beauty products is the greener the product, the easier it is to dispose of, since sustainability is factored into the packaging. So along with your eco-friendly bamboo toilet paper, earbuds, a sustainable beauty routine is generally better for the environment.
