Trend How-To: Spring Dressing

There is always that awkward transition from Summer to Autumn and Winter to Spring. Mother Nature is often prone to playing tricks on us with drastic temperature changes throughout the day, leaving us mere mortals puzzled and bemused with the frequent donning and un-donning of various items of clothing. So what to wear while you wait for the weather to blossom into a fine summer? Here’s a quick how-to guide:

LOOSE KNITS

Don’t put them away just yet! Those floppy knits with the big holes in them – yes, the ones you wore your sneaky thermals under throughout winter (embarrassing admission). Lose the thermals and wear with just a bralet or cute bustier under your oversized knits and pair them with a denim cut offs or jeans for cool, comfort.

DENIM JACKETS

Definitely one of the top trends this spring from model Ruby Aldridge to ultimate hipster Chloë Sevigny, the denim jacket is everywhere this season (see our how to guide HERE). Faded, cropped, loose, or studded they’ll add a little character and edge to your outfit.  Your inner lovechild will cry out in joy when you dig these hard-worn babies out of your closet. Roll the sleeves up and wear over those pretty summer dresses for instant rocker-off-duty chic and to keep you from the cold.

MAXI SKIRTS

Unless you’re Kate Middleton or Zara Phillips, you’ve probably grown accustomed to the idea that not every girl is born a princess and lives a fairy-tale. But fear not, style gurus, hope is not lost! Realise your dreams in lengthy hemlines and layers of fabric swishing at your ankles. I present to you, the maxi skirt, billowing behind the trails of graceful fashionistas from New York to Milan – and here to stay. From Anna dello Russo to our very own Abbey Lee Kershaw fashion icons across the globe are covering up their pins. Elegant and chic, try colour blocking with sheer pleated skirts in bright and bold colours to get that extra spring in your step or opt for more figure-hugging jersey knits that come in graphics and prints that are far from dull.

LEGGINGS

Practical and versatile, they’ll keep you toasty while you wait for the weather to warm up. Black is always a classic but once you get your hands on Black Milk leggings everything will probably seem blah and lacklustre. If you’re anything like me and stalk their website for new stock every week you’ll see they have leggings adorned with stars and comets, and sleek ones with lace inserts and zippers winding ingeniously down the side. Wear with a long tee (we stress the long tee) and you are good to go!

Note: Leggings, not jeggings! No unsightly fanny or behind jiggle in sight please!
