The Pirelli Calendar has a 51 year history of nude or nearly nude women filling its pages. For 51 years it has contained the sexiest models and celebrities of that time. For 2016 however, we have change. American portrait photographer, Annie Leibovitz, most famous for her work with Vanity Fair, has taken on the enormous responsibility of photographing women for the calendar for the second time in her career. And she has done something a little different.

In typical Leibovitz style she has pushed the boundaries, stayed unwaveringly true to her own aesthetic and created something truly remarkable that has the whole world talking… but for what reason? The women of the 2016 Pirelli Calendar are athletes, mothers, children, musicians, authors, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, influencers and comedians of all ages and, for the most part, clothed… for a calendar based on raw sex appeal for 51 years, this is huge. This is the first time that the calendar contains women selected for their achievements and not their bodies. There is no doubt that Leibovitz calendar will go down as one of the most iconic ever.
Tavi Gevenson so eloquently states why this calendar is a mark of cultural change, “a white, able-bodied cis-gendered woman being naked is just not revolutionary anymore,” she said. “I don’t think anyone is going to be like, ‘Damn, I wanted those naked chicks.”
