Do you feel like your garden is taking up way too much of your time? If so, it’s time to make some changes to the space to reduce maintenance requirements. Keep reading for 3 easy ways you can simplify your garden today.
#1 – Let Go of your Lawn
There is no such thing as a low-maintenance lawn. If you want to reduce the time spent looking after your garden, one of the first things you need to do is replace your lawn – or at least reduce the size of it.
For instance, you can install some gravel paths or wide paved edges around the garden’s perimeter to reduce the time spent mowing and edging your walkways, which can take hours on a weekly basis.
You could also replace your lawn with synthetic grass. Synthetic turf has come a long way, and it’s now easier than ever to book a synthetic grass installation. Synthetic grass will help keep a neat and tidy appearance and drastically reduce your time spent on maintenance.
Making these sorts of changes are a good idea is your lawn is a mess and you intend to sell your home soon, as they help boost the home’s value.
#2 – Focus on Natives
Another thing you can do if you want to make your garden lower maintenance is to plant native plants. Whilst you will still need to choose the right natives for your garden, native plants in general are naturally better suited to the climate and conditions of your home and therefore they tend to be easier to look after.
With the correct plant selection, you will spend less time worrying about keeping your garden beds alive and healthy with extra watering, fertilisation, pest and disease control, die back and more.
#3 – Give Each Tree a Wide Skirt
Another way to reduce garden maintenance is to give each tree a wide skirt – or border, and install appropriate underplantings. This will reduce the likelihood of weeds popping up, and the need to weed, as well as mow. You can install a border along the drip line or you can do it beyond.
Rather than planting border plants, focus on woodland plants or plants that are well suited to underplanting locations as these will thrive in low light conditions and survive amongst the roots that come with the trees.
Keeping a wide skirt is also a good way for you to dig compost into the ground, which will improve the vigour of the tree as well as anything planted underneath it.
