10 Fashion Rules To Break

The Rule: Take off one accessory before leaving the house.

It’s true that sometimes less is more, but sometimes more is more too! Perfect examples of piling on the bling include Leandra Medine of Man Repelling fame and Iris Apfel.

The Rule: Say no to kitten heels.

Scrap that, say hella yes. They’re back, thanks to Valentino and their studded gorgeous heels that have sold out over the last year. Perhaps its womens feel rebelling, crying out for comfy heels but if you pair them a lady like look like a full midi skirt and killer accessories, your outfit is sure to be a win.

The Rule: Exposed midriff is 90’s tacky.

True, if your belly is hanging out with a piercing over some low riding flared jeans- you have not mastered this trend well. But if you think sweet bralets with a high waisted skirt and a blazer- you are spot on for a fashionably chic outfit- although its perhaps not office appropriate.

The Rule: Don’t mix your prints.

Let’s be honest, mixing prints can be kinda daunting- its a whole lotta busy for your eyes and can be totally overwhelming. But print mixing can look fresh, modern and fashion forward, not to mention street style snap ready! Think florals with stripes, polka dots with Ikat. The key is colour combos and just having an eye for what works. If you are scared to start off with, why not try mixing prints with accessories in shoes, clutches or belts.

The Rule: Don’t mix silver and gold jewellery.

Pfft. I think many of us have already thrown this one out the door. Mixing metals is oh so on trend, and perfect for adding some colour and fun to your outfit. Layer up some gold and silver fine necklaces or fine rings for the perfect blogger ready look. Plus, don’t forget to add in that Rose Gold Michael Kors watch!

The Rule: Faux anything is cheap and tacky.

Nuh uh! In fact, the trend is leaning towards what we call “vegan leather” and faux fur because it is far more ethical! When your choices are to steer clear of wearing animal byproducts by wearing just as chic accessories and outfits that are faux…we say why not! All the major fashion houses now offer up faux alternatives.

The Rule: Fuller figured women should wear loose clothing.

This is a complete and utter myth. Often times girls that are conscious of this will actually make themselves look bigger by loosing their sexy body shape underneath that moo moo. They say that the area just under the bust is a woman’s smallest measurement, so if you are curvy or bigger- you should accentuate this with something structured that is higher than your waistline. Take Christina Hendricks for inspiration.

The Rule: Never wear denim on denim.

The old Canadian tuxedo has had a real revival in the last three years, and it seems to have stuck. Denim on denim can look TOTALLY chic, its all about cut, colour and shape. Try a darker shade on bottom- a nice skinny leg indigo jean would work, with a chambray coloured denim shirt that is light and effortless.

The Rule: Navy and black don’t work together.

It’s a matter of personal opinion really, but I think that navy and black are a super hot combination. You could try this with a navy shirt and black skirt or even in navy accessories. Designers like Carolina Herrera, Miu Miu, Gucci, Prabal Gurung and Céline have all offered up options to rock this combo.

The Rule: Say no to white heels.

Once passe and tacky, white heels have made a resurgence. The white stiletto has been embraced by the fashion pack, its a simple and chic way to make a statement in monochrome and lends itself to spring and summer outfits over a black pump, which can sometimes look heavy. Celebrities and bloggers alike have embraced this as well as the likes of Jimmy Choo, Louboutin and Celine.

The moral of the story is…dress in what you want, and what makes you happy! What are some of the rule you like to break?

Denim on Denim is legit if you pick the right jacket, sometimes it looks bad, but other time it looks great! Everything depends on how confident you are when wearing it!

THANK-YOU for pointing out that faux isn’t tacky. It is actually extremely awesome and if anything I would say real fur/leather is tacky. No one looks more cheap and nasty than someone parading around in a corpse.
