From the moment the vultures crawled on stage I was ready to be entertained, and entertained I was. “Voguing” experts Benny and Javier of New York dance duo the House of Ninja (you may remember them from America’s Next Top Model), set the scene for homegrown swimwear designer Lisa Maree‘s theatrical show. With models striding down the runway in crow headpieces, giant black feathered wings and even larger silk reptile print wings, the custom made costumes were worthy of even the best stage productions.
The collection, titled Under My Skin, drew upon metamorphosis for inspiration. The concept of shedding one’s skin was used as a metaphor for letting go of inhibitions and releasing the animal within. A fantastic theme for swimwear as I find simply trying on a swimwuit after months of winter requires the loss of one’s inhibitions!
Superb prints inspired by creatures such as snakes and butterflies dominated the runway but Lisa Maree made sure to include her signature, and personal favourite, crochet swimwear. Rachel Rutt looked remarkable (does she ever not!?) in a high cut purple crochet trikini while Amanda Ware made one of the darker and eerier digitally printed pieces look entirely appealing.
We were lucky enough to briefly catch up with the lovely Lisa after her show and she reiterated her desire to portray the inner strength of every woman. Her passion for getting us girls to let go of our insecurities and embrace the ferocity she believes lies dormant in all of us is testament to what a strong and driven woman she is, and we couldn’t be more excited about the results!
