Bedroom Decoration: 7 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Space

Bedroom Decoration

Our bedroom decoration style is probably the most accurate depiction of who we are and what we value. But that mightn’t be something you want to hear if you’re yet to invest any time and effort in enhancing the look and feel of your space. But fear not – there is hope for your bedroom yet!

While everyone no doubt loves the idea of their bedroom being a sanctuary from the outside world, we’ve all been guilty of neglecting this room of the house at one point in our lives or another.

Who can forget those student days when our bedrooms became a quasi study filled to the brim with reading materials, a push bike and last night’s takeaway containers.

Or maybe you’re a busy mum and the demands of raising a family have overtaken your ability to sort out the endless clutter and carve out a serene little enclave for yourself.

Whatever the reason that your bedroom decoration needs an uplift, we’re here to help.

Here’s 7 bedroom decoration tips to help you get the most out of your space and enhance the look and feel of your room.

Bedroom Decoration ideas and tips

#1 – Work with your light sources

No matter what type of room, light is the unsung hero in any interior situation. It highlights the natural structure of the room and accentuates its features. Light will enhance your interior design and any furniture such a feature chair or bedside table. Without great light, all those gorgeous decor pieces you have collected over the years won’t be honoured in the way they should be. Natural light is always preferable, but if that’s not available, consider soft lighting instead.

#2 – Consider a colour palette or theme

If you think that bedroom themes can be kitsch, then you mightn’t know how subtle they can be. Most home designers adhere to a theme or colour palette when implementing bedroom decoration, as it brings a narrative to the room and gives purpose to the decor within it. Consider a neutral palette or simple theme and introduce pops of colour sparingly to avoid a chaotic bedroom vibe.

#3 – Textures are key for bedroom decoration

There’s no fun in having a purely one-dimensional bedroom decoration style, as the most luxurious spaces usually have a number of textures that work with one another and bring dimension to the room. Given the diversity of your bedroom and the items within in, you can play with materials like cotton, fur, cane, marble and glass. As with any statement piece, bring them in one at a time so you can stop, modify or continue to style as required.

#4 – Include your bed in the display

Your bed and bedding are usually not considered ‘decor’, but they can certainly play against the design in your bedroom and accentuate the colours and tones you have chosen throughout. In fact, if you are trying to achieve a complex theme or want to highlight a colour that might not be so obvious in the space, then your bedding can be a great tool in tying that story together.

#5 – Bring art into your room

The design and the interior pieces you choose for your bedroom decoration is incredibly personal. Art in a bedroom is a gorgeous way to display who you are, and it can give the rest of your decor something to speak to. For example, if you chose a black and white photograph to hang on your wall, it would validate and enhance any minimalistic finishes and monochrome colours that you have used elsewhere in the room.

#6 – Use your floors for bedroom decoration

Carpet, wood or tiles – many of us don’t have a say in our flooring. Although that’s not to say you can’t add to them with textured rugs or woven mats to bring some warmth and flair into your bedroom. If your bedroom interior design is under-done, then these soft touches will go a long way in making your bedroom feel less stark.

#7 – Polish and repair

We all want to make the most of our bedroom, so that means there needs to be some maintenance to ensure everything looks its best. Polish the metal fixtures in your room (handles, rails, bed head, locks), repair those scuffed pieces that have come with you to the last 4 rentals and just give everything a good spruce so that they are looking as they should. There is no sense in highlighting something that is broken or damaged so start perfecting those older items to give your bedroom a lift!
