Liquid leather proved popular at RAFW with several designers, including Lucette, Flannel and Christopher Esber using plenty of paper-thin leather on the runway. However, It was Friedrich Gray’s edgy collection that best embodied the ‘tough girl’ image often associated with leather. The look was menacing and mostly black, featuring tight leather crop tops and skirts with strong diagonal lines. In contrast, Kate Sylvester proved leather can achieve an overall romantic look by teaming tan leather pieces with feminine pastel shades and floral corsages.
With the Australian winter in full swing there has never been a better season to experiment with leather… and I’m not just talking about a trusty leather jacket! If you’re shying away from leather pants why not invest in a spunky leather cuff- it will add an instant edge to any outfit. Nude, tan or caramel leather is also a fantastic way to take the ‘tough’ out of a tough material… take a leaf out of Kate Sylvester’s book and team with sheer layers or florals. For a true rock chick look, stick with black and favour studs and exposed zips.
