3. Divide and Conquer
Make the most of your items by creating maximum visibility. After all, you don’t use what you can’t see!
- Separate suits and sets. Instead, start to think of everything as “separates”.
- Bring out forgotten and previously hidden items (especially jewellery and accessories) into plain sight.
- Ditch your shoe boxes and arrange shoes in such a way that they are easy to see and easy to access (clear plastic drawers work well).
- Forget about seasons. Instead, have wearable clothing from all seasons available to choose from at all times. Why not put leggings under a summer dress, or layer light spring layers in cooler months?
- You may want to downgrade certain “special occasion” pieces into the “everyday” category, to start pairing them with more casual pieces.
- If you have room, hang as many items as possible – like a shop, rather than folded. This is a great way for seeing what you have and bringing it all out into the open (also feels more like shopping!)
Once you can clearly see what you own (and it’s entirety!) you won’t have to wrack your brain everyday before work (and before coffee – impossible). You’ll also be more likely to see completely new combinations.
So everyone, these are the beginnings to ‘shopping your own wardrobe’. Be sure to check back over the course of the next week or so where I go into more ways you can get more out of your existing options.
P.S Don’t buy anything new in the meantime!
Do you have any tips or tricks of your own for getting the most out of your clothing? Or do you tend to wear the same items over and over again, eventually getting bored? Let us know in the comments below!

[…] Breakfast with Audrey has some good tips on shopping your closet. […]
My go to is to never throw out dresses- as they can be accessorised and updated with season essentials
Great tip – thanks for sharing!
great tips!
Glad you found it useful @newbie!
Thanks – I’m trying really hard to shop my wardrobe, by dragging the pre – baby stuff out again, rather than buying new stuff.
I am also trying! The problem for me is, I cannot see everything I own, so I keep reaching for the same items when I’m rushing (always). Argh!
