Five Minutes With Ulyana, Designer Of None The Richer

I first worked on the label KiiK with my Mum (which is still running today) learning all about this business the hard way (on our own) and when I felt ready enough in  my design abilities I wanted to create a label that reflected more of who I am.

How would you describe the aesthetic for None The Richer?

I create on emotion and construct clothes that make you feel like you’re embodying a character. Each range varies as I am very much a fashion chameleon but there is one aesthetic I try and hold and that is to keep it artistic.

Where does the name come from?

My brother jokingly said creating my own label would make me “None the Richer” and so that stuck with me.

What inspires you creatively?

Everything and anything from architecture to what people say. Quite often when I find beautiful fabrics I automatically think of how it makes me feel and can work off that sentiment. I also like to take elements from diverse characteristics and meld them together. I believe a huge thing for me is keeping the balance between reality and fantasy relevant, so that in itself is inspiring.

Who are your personal style icons?

I have so many so today I’ll go with  Alicia Silverstone (old school), Abbey lee Kershaw, Lady Gaga, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Boy George and Run D-M-C.  I think it’s safe to say I’m a little bit of a groupie? Or just heavily influenced by musicians, let’s go with the latter.

What would you say is the key pieces that sums up the current collection?

Pretty sheer silk printed dresses with billowing sleeves, any of the eagle accessories and warm disheveled jackets that are key to complete your rock and roll gypsy look.

What has been your best career moment to date?

I think there is always something exciting happening with the brand that I really couldn’t define one moment.  What I do know is I am ridiculously excited for Rosemount Australia Fashion week this year in May.

Who is the None The Richer girl?

None the Richer girl is a little pop, a drop of rock, a dash of glam, a sprinkle of grunge, a splash of mess and loves dancing in the street. As I am such a fashion chameleon it’s for anyone who is free spirited and enjoys playing dress ups.

If you could have breakfast with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Roberto Cavalli – creative genius.

David Bowie – out of his mind, like me.

Josh Beech – eye candy.
