The silly season has come to an end and Mondayitis is back in full throttle. However the new year is a perfect opportunity to set some career goals and seize new opportunities. Which is why I thought it would be perfect to share with BWA readers some hot tips in order to get to the top.
Networking
Set up a LinkedIn profile and connect with people in your industry. LinkedIn is an easy way to find the people and knowledge you need to achieve your goals. It enables you to control your professional identity online and promote yourself.
Look your best
Take pride in your appearance and dress to the occasion. Look professional, don’t go overboard with make-up and keep your hair neat and tidy. It leaves a lasting impression.
Organise yourself
Take time out before you go to bed to plan your schedule for the next day, or write down your ‘to do’ list. Even plan your outfit for the next day if you are a stress-head.
Get to know your colleagues and boss
It pays off to be nice in the work place. Remember names and certain conversations you have with people. Be confident and learn more about your boss –they are the one who will remember your face when that certain promotion comes up.
Industry knowledge and learning
Take time out to learn more about the industry you’re in or study further. Ask someone you know with experience to be your mentor and guide you. Become aware of your surroundings by reading the news everyday.
Attend industry events
Start your RSVP’s! Make an effort to go to events that are within your industry and start meeting new people. This is a perfect way to get your name and face out there and sell yourself.
Office etiquette
Research shows more and more people in the workplace are becoming lazy and abbreviating their emails to the likes of ‘ppl’, ‘bec’ and ‘tmw’. This is a big NO! Communication in and out of the office is highly important. Write in proper English please.
Get motivated
Exercise before you go to work and eat brain-boosting food. Set yourself some realistic career goals you want to achieve for the year and get the ball rolling!
