Alexander Mcqueen for spring/summer 2012 RTW was bondage meets mermaid, in a pairing that seems so unusual yet so right.
Proving once again that Sarah Burton was the best choice to superceed the McQueen throne, the talented designer based the aesthetic of the collection on “the three Gs: Grès for the pleating and draping, Gaudà for the architecture, and Gaia for the sense of all-encompassing oceanic life that infused the clothes, like the outfits composed of coral or shells. ” (Style.com).
The pieces evoked an image of goddesses emerging from a far away land, with lace masks and curiously cut gowns at the waist and shoulders furthering the otherworldly experience.
The key, as always is in the intricate detailing. Lace, chiffon and leather worked seamlessly together to provide layer upon layer of texture. The colour palette was neutral bar a select few neon bright dresses one of which was reminiscent of a solitary jellyfish floating through the ocean.
The McQueen aesthetic was unmistakable in the intricacy and silhouette however Burton has forged a name for herself as a designer in her own right.
