Kale might have become a byword for smug health fanatics and all that’s trendy over the past couple of years, but don’t let this put you off.The leafy green has shot from forgotten foodstuff to everyone’s favourite superfood for legitimate reasons; it’s packed with nutrients, and despite not being the most attractive veg, tastes scrumptious. So whether you love kale, or like us love to hate the stuff, packing your diet full of this nutritional powerhouse will serve you in more ways than one.

Check out the top five reasons you should add kale to your shopping list this week (we promise not to call you a hipster).

#1 It’s rich in vitamins and fibre

Kale has high calcium, magnesium, and vitamin A and K content which helps to strengthen bones and protect against various cancers. Its high fibre content is great for aiding digestion and elimination making it a good detox food as well as keeping your liver healthy. Plus it has more iron than beef!

# 2 It’s an antioxidant dream

Containing multiple antioxidants, including kaempferol  andquercetin, the anti-inflammatory benefits of this green will reduce the risk of diabetes, arthritis, stroke and heart disease.

#3 It’s in season virtually all year-round

Kale is easy to grow and unlike many foods, it’s hardy during tough winter conditions and available in shops for most of the year. An added bonus of being so accessible means it won’t cost you the earth to buy.

#4 It’s a versatile vegetable

Whether you prefer your kale in salads, smoothies or soups, as the star of your meal or as a simple side dish, the versatile nature of kale makes it easy to incorporate into your diet. For instant inspiration, use it any recipe where you would use spinach or silverbeet.

#5 Kale chips are amazing

It might be annoyingly trendy but kale chips taste too damn delicious to be ignored. Bake them with nutritional yeast flakes for a surprisingly cheesy flavour or simply with salt and pepper for a dangerously moreish snack.

I like that necklace. I wonder if I wore it around my neck that people would think my name was Kale. That would be okay!

To be honest, I’ve never seen it in a grocery store. Thus, I’ve never tried it.
