Lessons Learned From Renovations: Tips For 2025

home renovation tips 2025
Renovating your home is exciting but it is also becoming increasingly complex. If you’re looking to renovate in 2025, here are some of the biggest lessons homeowners learned last year that you need to know.

Thousands of homeowners renovate their homes every year. Unfortunately, the process is not as simple as it once was, thanks to the ever-increasing cost of living pressures, developments in technology and materials, not to mention the local laws to adhere to. To make things easier, here’s 4 of the biggest tips renovators should know in 2025.

#1 – Hire professionals

With the cost of living rising, people understandably want to handle more of their renovations themselves. While this is a great idea in theory, it doesn’t always turn out as you hope. Whether you’re a complete novice or a skilled DIY’er, renovations are large projects to take on, and they come with risks and problems.

Unless you are a professional renovator, or you have the specific skill required for the works to be completed, it’s a better idea to leave the work to professionals. This is especially true when it comes to projects that carry a higher risk, such as electrical work and plumbing.

#2 – Tackle electrics and plumbing first

You should always have a trade professional look at the electrics and plumbing of your property before any renovation. Even if you’re not  planning to upgrade your electrics, it’s still a good idea to hire an electrician to carry out a safety check, and provide you with a plan of your wiring. A wiring plan is very helpful if you plan to take any walls down or if you are adding an extension or installing any new walls.

The same goes for plumbing. If you don’t know where your pipes are laid, it’s easy to break them which causes big issues down the line. This is vital for areas such as a kitchen or bathroom.

HOW TO KNOW WHEN TO MOVE HO

#3 – Always obtain permits first

In the past, it’s been easy for homeowners to bypass local building laws, whether deliberately or by accident. However, in recent years, the process has tightened up considerably and it’s more difficult to avoid oversight by local authorities. To avoid fines and more, you need to educate yourself about any applicable laws you need to follow and permits you must obtain before you start the project.

#4 – Source quality materials from reliable sources

In an effort to keep costs down and stick to your budget, you might seek low cost materials or suppliers for your renovation project. However, in many cases this will be a false economy as low quality materials tend to deteriorate quickly.

As many a budget-conscious renovator has learned, unfortunately, cheap materials will often cost you more in the long run when repairs and replacements are needed. Instead, take time to save more capital to increase your budget and buy high quality materials that are durable and made to last.
