4 Tips To Make Your Skin Look Amazing In Photographs

how to get amazing skin in photos

Many people are paranoid about the idea of being photographed. They may have suffered a recent breakout and don’t like the look of their skin, or perhaps they feel they look tired or are simply not photogenic.

Whatever the reason, there are ways you can overcome your hurdles and prepare yourself for that photo! Here, we take a look at how to get your skin photo-ready. Keep reading to learn more.

#1 – Take action in advance

A few good habits and lifestyle changes adopted in advance can make all the difference to your skin and overall health, setting you up for glowing skin for the rest of your life.

Imagine facing a photoshoot knowing you don’t have to worry about makeup at all! Lifestyle habits include, getting plenty of good quality sleep, managing your stress levels and doing regular exercise.

#2 – Start from the inside

You’ve doubtless heard it all before, but none of us should underestimate how much difference this tip can make. Pay attention to what you eat, especially in the few days before any event where you’ll be photographed.

Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg, and don’t forget the berries. They’re full of antioxidants that will help your skin glow.

Minimise your intake of meat, sugar, and carbohydrates.

Keep hydrated with pure water or coconut water. (Avoid alcohol as it tends to cause redness and puffiness – things we’re trying to minimise!)

#3 – General skincare tips

We’ve covered in countless beauty and skincare articles all the ways you should look after your skin – not just in preparation for photos, but in general. In summary, the very least you should be doing for always photo-ready skin is:

Use a high SPF sunscreen every day – even if it’s cloudy or rainy.

Cleanse and moisturise morning and night.

Look for skincare products that contain antioxidants or active ingredients.

#4 – Skincare on the day

In addition to your regular and trusted skincare routine, (don’t try anything new on photo day), use a cool hydrating mask in the morning to reduce any puffiness.

Splashing your face with cold water can help, and, yes, that old trick with cucumber slices on your eyes or cold teaspoons can reduce puffiness in the eye area. Tip: never re-use the slices, and be sure to wash the cucumber thoroughly before use to remove any traces of pesticides & fertiliser.

#5 – Makeup on the day

If you’re looking for the most natural look, the aim is to use as little makeup as possible – the key is to correct rather than smother your face if there are any minor faults. Too much foundation will clog pores, and draw attention to fine lines and wrinkles.

Keep foundation light by using your fingers to apply it and blend thoroughly. Use concealer only where necessary, ensuring you use the minimum possible around the eye area. Too much and you may see caking, which isn’t ideal under HD photography.

Another key tip to getting your skin looking it’s best in photos is to avoid shine – you don’t want anything to reflect the flash if it’s used. The easiest way to achieve this is to use a light matte foundation and a translucent powder. You may also want to avoid shimmer, no matter how tempting it may be.

Lastly, if you know you are going to be photographed, then you may want to avoid wearing any products containing SPF. This can cause a white cast on the skin which is highly unflattering in photos.

#6 – Photo Editing

Last but not least, as a last resort, if your skin still doesn’t look great in photos, you can always fake it! There are a plethora of photo editing apps out there, such as Facetune’s blemish remover app which lets you touch up problem areas quickly and easily.
