The Spring Racing season is fast approaching! It all kicks off on the 9th October with the Caulfield Guineas, followed by a month-long festival of racing into November. The carnival reaches its peak on Melbourne Cup Day before winding down for family day at Stakes Day.
Popping a bottle of champagne, dressing up and gathering with friends during the Spring Racing carnival is a quintessential Melbourne experience. From Caulfield Cup to Stakes Day, there are a smorgasbord of race events to attend and a plethora of opportunities to let our hair down. This year is of course a little different, and it’s really anyone’s guess right now as to whether the Spring Racing season will be spectator-free or otherwise.
So, in the spirit of finding little moments to celebrate and opportunities to dress up (even if just for your lounge room), we’ve pulled together a guide on what to wear this year. Because we all need – no, deserve – opportunities to put on our heels, grab a fascinator or some exquisite racing millinery and drink bubbles again.
During more ‘normal’ times, thousands flock to the tracks in their most stylish outfits for a day of frivolity and cheer. But who says you can’t still dress up in your most stylish outfit at home (or outdoors for a picnic) to celebrate the races! Whether you get your dress and heels out or not, we think you’ve at least got to don a fascinator.
Here’s our top tips on racing millinery, bags and more to wear to the (virtual) Spring Racing Season in 2021.
#1 – Wide Brim Hat
Planning a picnic spread for the races this year at home or your local park? All you need is the laptop set up with the livestream, a delicious platter of snacks and a bottle of bubbles to get the party started.
If you can’t bring yourself to put on your glam dress, don’t forget to wear a wide brim hat. Not only will it be a stylish nod to the racing season, it’ll also keep you protected from the sun at the same time, so it’s stylish and practical all at once – what’s not to love! Take a look over at the gorgeous hats perfect for the racing season from Olga Berg now.
#2 – The Wedge Heel
Make it cute but keep it comfy with a wedge heel. Whether you’re hitting the picnic lawns or cosying up on the couch, you can never go wrong with this style of heel. Wedge heels add some height and sophistication to your outfit, but aren’t over the top for a daytime event. The best point is you won’t end up with sore feet after a day standing!
#3 – Pearl Headband
Do you feel that donning a fascinator is a bit OTT this year? Pretty headbands please take a bow everywhere. We get it, fascinators are a must-have when trackside but they can be a little overwhelming when gathered around a picnic blanket. Meet us half-way with getting dressed up this year and try a classy pearl headband.
A pearl headband instantly adds elegance to your outfit, while providing a subtle nod to racing season – without making you feel overdressed. Olga Berg have a curated edit of beautiful pearl headbands to choose from that are also ideal to wear to other daytime events over the summer season and bridal parties.
#4 – The Clutch Bag
It’s the finishing touch to any outfit, so if you’re joining us and dressing up this year then don’t forget your clutch bag! If you’re staying at home you have our permission to skip this one (if you must), but if you’re hitting the park then you definitely need to go with a clutch in tow.
From subtle nude clutches, to bags shaped like a big flash camera, or multi-coloured glitter bags, your handbag can totally make (or break) your outfit at the best of times.
If there’s just two pieces you wear to inject some spring carnival spirit this year, make it a clutch and a fascinator. We’ll see you trackside next year!
