BWA Sneak Peek: David Jones Summer 2011 Fashion Launch Model Casting

When the invitation was extended to BWA to peek in on the model casting for this year’s Summer 2011 Fashion Launch for David Jones, we did not hesitate!

This is a huge opportunity for budding models to walk alongside David Jones Ambassador Miranda Kerr who will be hitting the catwalk for the department store on August 3rd.

There was a lot of potential talent in the room and when we heard the head stylist Kelvin Harries announce that only four of the hundreds of male models walking would be accepted I could not fathom how he would whittle the choices down.

There were some familiar faces in the room  and some very fresh ones, but it was amazing to get an insight into the daily life of a model (lots of rejection!).

Plus, a little Monday morning eye candy is never a bad thing!

BWA had the chance to chat with Kelvin after the casting about what he was looking for and the key trends for summer:

It seems to be a hard job whittling down hundreds of models to a handful to walk on the catwalk! What are you looking for when casting for the show?

When casting for models I look for people who can carry the clothes they wear with conviction. They need to look extremely at ease and comfortable within themselves, their walk is relaxed, sophisticated, contained, definitely not too aloof. The body must be well proportioned and healthy and their carriage helps to maximise the impact of the garments they wear.

What are the key trends for summer that our readers should keep their eyes out for at the David Jones Summer 2011 launch?

The key trends your readers should be looking out for this season are bold primary block colours, graphic and outsized prints, stripes , white and silhouettes that are moving from simple clean 60’s lines to more sexy high voltage 70’s references

What is your best career moment to date?
