BWA Chats To Robyn Lawley

Having just featured on both French Elle and Italian Vogue, Robyn Lawley’s career seems to be blowing up and is smashing through the norm of who we idolize in the modelling industry. At 21, this Australian beauty is loud, proud and vivacious but like all girls has her insecurities. BWA sat down to chat to Ms Lawley about her rise to fame, plus sized modelling and more.

A huge congratulations is in order on your latest cover for Italian Vogue…what does it feel like to be an inspiration for real girls across the globe?

Why thank you, I know what it meant to me to see models of larger sizes in magazines, it felt great so hopefully people can feel better about their bodies by seeing mine.

Was your dream always to be a model?

No, not really, it’s not something you know that you will do well in, so I had other goals such as be a chef and opening my own restaurant. But when I realized I wasn’t ready to work in a kitchen all day everyday and kill my passion for cooking,  I thought of modelling instead and when I’m older and ready I’ll open my restaurant.

You seem so confident in your own skin, was it always that way with you?

No, and I doubt anyone is 100% confident, I just know from experience someone who points out their flaws all the time seems more flawed when you portray a confident person, you start to feel more comfortable and then you can let the real you shine.

The best thing about being a plus sized model?

That I get to eat!

The worst thing about being a plus sized model?

Always getting judged by my size, and rarely getting used by designers

How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic, I always like to wear something that stands out I like to look different I don’t do conservative well, I love my vintage pieces, so when I get the time I always check out local markets for those amazing forgotten treasures

Who are your style icons?

Peaches, Joan Jett, Marilyn Monroe

Do you think the industry will eventually come around to booking plus sized models on a regular basis?

Yes, I have hope that they will, it’s a fickle world though, but we are heading in the right direction.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Waking up at 2am on gut instinct to check my emails and then seeing my Vogue cover for the first time

If you could have Breakfast with anybody who would it be?

Well being in a long distance relationship I would choose my boyfriend as I only get too see him every 2 months, if someone could join us Janis Joplin

What can we expect from Robyn Lawley for 2011?

Well hopefully more covers, more editorial and who’s knows maybe catwalk if I’m lucky 🙂

Finally, what advice do you give to girls out there who may be struggling with their body image?

Listen to your body, I know that’s cliché but by listening to it you will reach your ‘set’ body weight, you have to learn to be comfortable with your body type fighting it will only make matters worse.
