Women To Watch: Jane Lu, Founder of Showpony

We have been following the meteoric rise and success of Sydney based fashion label Show Pony for some time now. Tapped by the likes of BRW and AFR as one to watch under thirty, Jane Lu’s passion for her job and her obvious talent for business have made her a force to be reckoned with. We sat down with Jane to chat all things Show Pony and get some insight into life as a Show Pony girl.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how Show Pony was born?

Show Pony flourished from the confines of the boring grey cubicle that I used to work in – to escape for my mundane corporate job, I was always shopping online or procrastinating on Facebook. Plus I wanted pretty much a new outfit for every big night out, and just couldn’t find a store that suited my needs and my budget. So I quit my job in corporate finance, and just went for it!

What is a typical day in the life at ShowPony HQ like?

As cliched as this is, there is no typical day at Show Pony. I worked out of our warehouse in Ultimo – that’s where we have our shoots, pack all the orders, and brainstorm new awesomeness to bring to our customers. Of course there’s no getting away from days of accounting and admin, but now I’m “allowed to” be on Facebook all day, so for me, sad as that is, that’s living the dream!

How would you describe your style?

Our “what’s new” section is literally a reflection of my style. I dress to suit my mood. Right now I’m super excited about all the bright colours coming back this summer (so over pastels!). That said, my play-it-safe outfit would always involve sky-high heels and an a-line skirt.

How would you describe the ShowPony girl?

A Show Pony girl is exuberant and confident, a chameleon that expresses her moods through fashion. With an insatiable appetite for fun, she loves the beautiful and quirky things in life. She has an undeniable passion for love, life and her friends which radiate through her composition and charm.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years is such a long time considering I would’ve never imagined I would be where I am now when I started Show Pony three years ago. Hopefully still building up the Pony empire and travelling a lot more for work. I’ve managed to make one of my passions part of my career (which is Facebook, most people tell me that doesn’t count, but I don’t care), so hopefully in 5 years I’ll be bouncing between our international offices!

Your fave bloggers?

After spending a semester on exchange in Sweden, I’m obsessed with all things Svenska. So loving the Swedish bloggers like Fanny Staaf, Lisa Olsson, Angelica Blick, Victoria Tornegren. And how can anyone not be obsessed with Fashion Toast. But mostly I just love stalking everyone and anyone on Tumblr and Insta.

Things you cant leave the house without?

My phone. That’s literally it!

Top style tips for summer?

Don’t be afraid of colour, get excited that pink is back, and just remember, not matter how amazing your outfit is, any little sweat patch will ruin it!!

If you could have breakfast with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Gordon Ramsay – I’m obsessed with the man! His is an amazing entrepreneur that has built a ridiculously successful franchise and brand.

PRETTY smart, PRETTY incredible and PRETTY talented. Pretty is too simple a word to describe her. She made an empire out of a social media strategy – so awesome!
