It started with a single T-shirt in 2003 – humble beginnings for a clothing line that now boasts an ex Proenza Schouler designer. Chrissie Miller’s New York company, Sophomore, was an overnight success. Having originally planned to only make t-shirts for friends, Miller teamed with Madeline von Froomer (who quit Proenza Schouler) to create this quintessentially New York clothing line. Sophomore now offers a range of contemporary sportswear as well as the basics that catapulted it to fame.
Taking inspiration from the Lower East style of the 70s, Sophomore has a distinct retro vibe that makes for failsafe clothing with character. Miller and von Froomer are often influenced by pop culture, adorning their apparel with slogans and pictures. The most recent example being a Charlie Sheen ‘Winning’ t-shirt that I can’t wait to get my hands on! Sophomore’s campaigns pack a punch too – Spring 2008 saw Bijou Philips flashing traffic. Have a peek at Sophomore’s most recent collection as well as some past lookbook snaps below.
