How To Get Rid Of Winter Skin Once And For All!

Written by beauty addict, Brianna Frilay

There’s no escaping the fact that we are well and truly in the depths of winter, with a good portion of the season still to go. If you’re like me, you’re wondering how to rid your skin of the dreaded dryness and flakiness that consumes us during these cold months. To get your skin doing what you want it to do it’s important to find a skincare routine that works for your skin type – it’s a matter of (careful!) trial and error.

During winter, it is best to keep your skincare routine to a minimum, using too many products can dry out your skin even more than it already might be. On a day to day basis, cleansing and moisturising is enough to suffice and give you a healthy looking glow. 2 – 3 times week it is good to give your skin a little bit more TLC by using an exfoliator and a face mask to rid your skin of any dirt in your pores.

CLEANSING –

For a cleanser, I recommend Michael Todd’s Cleanse and Tone  and the Foaming Cleanser by Simple. Each cleanser offers something different, Cleanse and Tone is doing two things at once, it tones out your skin tone as well as clearing your pores out, whilst removing traces of makeup. Simple provides a really clean and healthy glow to your skin as soon as you’ve completed your skincare routine. Using Simple on days when you’ve not worn makeup works really nicely. Both cleansers are great and also leave your skin feeling silky and smooth.

For a certified organic option, the IVI Organics Gel or Creme Cleanser is a luxurious winner. Gotu Kola helps to remove the skin’s impurities and Vitamin E strengthens the skin’s barrier function and promotes healing. The IVI cleansers smell great, they gently remove traces of makeup, whilst leaving skin feeling refreshed and supple.

EXFOLIATING –

If you’re after something that has small micro-beads to extract dirt or dead skin cells St. Ives Ageless Skin Scrub works really well and gives an improved appearance to the skin after about a week. Leaving this product on your skin for around about 45 seconds gives the best results.

For a much stronger exfoliator, I recommend Frank Original Coffee Scrub which is fairly new to the market and hugely popular. I do not recommend using this product every day however, as it can be very harsh on the skin. Tip: when you use Frank, lather it all over your face/body and leave it to settle for 10 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water. The difference between your skin prior to one use of Frank is incredible, it works so well on dry skin that you would almost forget you ever had dry spots!

For an au natural option, the Puretopia Smooth & Renew Gentle Exfoliating Face Scrub is a must. In order to combat the seasonal change, this scrub will gently remove any dead skin cells, excess oil, pollution, grime and makeup. The Puretopia range is free from animal testing, synthetic fragrances, parabens, skin drying sulfates, artifical colours, phthalates, propylene glycol and silicones.

MOISTURISING –

Moisturising is really important, you are helping your skin SO much just by applying a good quality moisturiser that works for your skin type. Moisturising controls the natural oils and water escaping from your skin, while leaving your skin feeling fresh and hydrated. My personal favourite is Michael Todd’s Citrus Cream Moisturiser – it is not greasy at all so you don’t feel sticky after applying it.

Of a night time it’s best to go in with a serum, I recommend Michael Todd’s ANTIOX Serum, this ensures that other layers are also getting the same treatment that the epidermis is. The IVI Organics serum is also fantastic, and it contains Australia’s very own Kakadu Plum which is the world’s richest natural source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and an essential nutrient to help slow the ageing process.

Using an undereye cream is also very beneficial as it protects the skin underneath our eyes, which is very fragile and thin. It is really important that we look after the delicate eye area in the best ways possible. Undereye creams incorporate specially created formulas that are gentler than those contained in regular moisturisers. Michael Todd’s INTENSIVE Eye Cream is what I would recommend to anyone, it’s a very thin consistency, but it gets the job done. So for those that suffer from dryness around the eyes – this works!

The Puretopia range also has an eye-care solution that is worth checking out for tired eyes. It comes by way of a refresh and detox massage roller which works to sooth and refresh whilst helping to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

FACE MASK –

Cleaning your skin with a mask is beneficial because a mask deeply reaches into our pores and extract all sorts of nasties, leaving a beautiful clear face. A really great mask is the Fig and Yarrow Clay Mask. If your skin really needs a good clear out and your pores need unclogging, go for a clay mask such as the Fig and Yarrow. The Puretopia Soothing Gel Mask is a lighter style of mask with a thin film application that provides for an instant radiance boost, rather than a very deep cleanse.

Bottom Line:

For a skin care routine to work, the key is to maintain consistency. It is also important to give a product time to start working and not move onto something new after just one or two uses. (And with dry skin, the best defence is keeping on top of it daily!)

Following these steps will make a huge difference in the way your skin looks and feels. There are amazing products out in the beauty world, you’ve just got to find something that works for you, your skin type and tone.
