Guest Editor Heart + Bleecker: Perth Fashion Festival 2011

Our Guest Editor Chow from Heart + Bleecker with all the latest from Perth Fashion Festival for 2011.

This week marked the beginning of the Perth Fashion Festival for 2011, an event highly anticipated for those in Western Australia. This year the festival has recognised fashion bloggers as an integral part of the industry and a few were invited to the shows as VIP guests. Being able to blog and tweet live from the front row has been a great experience and it has been fantastic knowing that blogging has allowed an opportunity that I would never have been given otherwise! Other Perth bloggers invited as guests include Laura of Peanut Moonbeam Knickers, Bonnie of Bonnie Friday, Kim of Blonde Suburbia and Jessie of The Velvet Bow, as well as Sydneysiders Fashion Hayley and Style Me Romy.

Each year the festival sets a different location for what is known as ‘Fashion Paramount’, and 2011 saw the WA museum chosen as the official location. It was a beautiful choice and looked amazing set up for the runway.

I have already attended more than five shows and what I have seen so far has been impressive. Opening night was a VIP event held 33 floors up in Perth’s revolving restarant, with Aurelio Costarella the featured designer. Guests drank champagne and listened to a live soundtrack as Costarella’s designs were modelled against the bright lights of the city below.

With an all West Australian designer line up including Story By Tang, Yeojin Bae and Ae’lkemi, the collections have ranged from bright hues and edgy cutouts to 80s crimped hair and sophisticated glamour. My personal favourite so far has been Paper Skye, an ethereal collection of everything sheer, white and drapey and every piece would be perfect for my wardrobe. The final day of the festival will see the label Wheels & Dollbaby celebrating their 25th anniversary with a special show at His Majesty’s Theatre, an event perhaps the most awaited.

Equally as enjoyable as the runway is hanging out at the official PFF fashion bar between shows and checking out the local street style. Perth is known for its more laid back and eclectic style and fashion week is no exception. Among the ubitiquious black on black, bright accessories and metallic hues were also plentiful and added a welcome pop of colour.

With just over half the week to go, I look forward to viewing the rest of the collections on show and am already looking forward to PFF 2012!
