What To Look Out For When Moving Into A New Home

Whether you’re moving into a newly built home, a renovated one, or an older build, there are certain things to look out for that’ll ease your move and guarantee you enjoy your new space.

Moving from one house to another can be a very tedious thing to do. You might think that following your pre-move checklist means that all the hard work is over – wrong! For maximum preparedness, there is still more to do – this time in the new house where you’re about to move.

Below are a few tips to guide you into preparing better for your new house.

#1 – Do A Thorough Walkthrough

Walking through your new house in its still empty state has a lot of advantages. First, it’ll help you to scan the house’s interiors better and let you mentally picture how your belongings from your old house will fit into this new one.

For measurement accuracy, get out the measuring tape. A few pre-measurements will help you plan where you’ll place your stuff in advance of the move day and save time shuffling things about in the long run.

Another advantage of the walkthrough is that it’ll highlight any outstanding areas or loose ends which may have been part of the sale handover. For instance it’ll help you confirm if every box has been ticked and if any agreed-upon repairs have been made.

#2 – Check for Connections

You don’t want to move into your new house only to discover that the proper connections for power, gas, and water have not been made. No one needs to be told how frustrating being unable to cook or use electricity is!

If you can, check if the connections are ready to go, and if they aren’t, call upon a reliable energy suppliers to connect you to an energy plan or have a new meter installed.

#3 – Take Safety Precautions

Taking safety precautions is another important thing to do when you’re moving into a new home, especially if you’re moving in with kids and pets. For instance, make sure that no sharp objects are lying around, make adjustments to sharp edges, slippery floors, malfunctioning equipment, wall sockets etc.

Also, toolboxes that contain harmful objects should be kept out of reach of children. You can also use this pre-move window to put proper child/pet-proof measures into place.

#4 – Deep Clean

Cleaning the house is another important part of moving, and it’s best done while the house is still empty. As the professionals say, ‘always clean high before cleaning low’ – start cleaning from the top of the room to the bottom.

The ceiling and features close to the ceiling should be where you start cleaning before moving to the appliances on the floor and then to the floor itself. You might need a steam cleaner for the carpet, and don’t forget to clean the oven too.

#5 – Security

If you’re moving into a house that was previously occupied, it’s wise to changing the door locks throughout. You could also install CCTV cameras as an extra security measure. Also, don’t forget to check whether any other preventative security measures are still in good condition.

Wrapping Up

Moving into a new home is generally tedious, but these tips might make it easier! One last tip would be to be friendly with your new neighbours. Who knows, they might even give you a hand when you need it.
