How To Wear Boater Hats

For an instant style update this Summer, look to the boater hat.

I’ve been spotting boaters on fashionable heads everywhere this summer and I can’t help but want to jump on the boater trend myself. This flat-topped, flat-rimmed hat, usually made out of straw (but occasionally made out of more refined materials such as lace, raffia or canvas) is perfect for now.

Redolent of yesteryear (the sporting boater hat was THE hat to be seen in in the 1930’s), this jaunty style makes you instantly want to row a rowboat or take a long lazy picnic. Miles more quirky than the 70’s floppy hat, and magnitudes more chic than a baseball cap, you can wear your boater with just about anything.

How to style it? Stylish folks are wearing boaters either traditionally: high-waisted shorts, short dresses, florals, cotton lace, and flat sandals OR in a modern way: think denim cut-offs, shirts, blazers, zero prints and minimal colour.

How to wear the hat itself? If it’s more of a classic look you are after, wear your boater front-on (like a private school uniform) OR for a little more swagger go for a light tilt to the side.

For your hair – according to international hairstylist Jean Louis David, the boater hat sits nicely on short hair or an up-do. Think low, ballerina bun for a strict-chic look, or slightly dishevelled for a more casual style. The boater hat also goes perfectly with a cute braid pulled over one shoulder (if you haven’t cut it off into a LOB already!)

Where to buy: The absolute go-to for boaters amongst the Australian fashion pack is without a doubt ‘Lack of Color‘. Featuring short and long-brimmed versions of a classic boater as well as other incarnations of the boater style, (and some amazing fedoras!) this is your best place to start. Nasty Gal also has some great choices.

Yup, the boater hat certainly looks fab on short hair or an up-do. Like the fourth one here in the list. Well, I can just say that the variation in the costumes and looks are adorable in order to explore the best one that suits with the hat. My vote of course goes to the fourth one.
