Brides, it’s time for “the talk.” Now that you’re about to embark on the second most significant journey of your life (I don’t know what the first is, but it’s important to always leave room for further awesomeness to unfold), we need to dabble in a little honesty. Firstly, you are about to learn that there are more shades of white than you can possibly imagine, and you’re going to have to pretend you can see the difference between each and every one of them whilst trying on wedding gowns. Secondly, give your bridesmaids a fake contact number and email address so any negative feedback they may have about your wedding choices will be sent into the abyss, and not into your inbox. And finally, do not – and I repeat, do not – use your wedding day to experiment with your look. Here’s why.
1. Always wanted a fringe? Great! They’re awesome, good choice. But a fringe is a pretty big change and it can take a while to get used to. So if you’re going to get a drastic haircut, give yourself plenty of time to grow it out just in case you loathe it.
2. If you say it’s for a wedding, most places will book the same hairdresser and makeup artist to do both the trial and the actual day. However this isn’t always the case with some tanning salons, so make sure you get his/her name and make an appointment with the same person both times.
3. If you want to change anything in your beauty routine (moisturiser, night cream etc), do it months ahead instead of weeks. You need to give yourself loads of time to switch back or find an alternative if the new products cause you to break out or irritate your skin.
4. If you don’t really wear makeup in your day-to-day life, start playing with it leading up to the big day. If you don’t use it often, even the smallest amount will make you feel like you’re wearing way too much. And makeup artists are pretty generous in their application because you need to be able to see your lovely face in the wedding pics.
5. You might find a makeup-look you like in a magazine (or on BWA!), but hate the way it looks once it’s on. Just before you walk down the aisle is an inconvenient moment to find out you’re not a fan of the smokey-eyed, red-lip combo. So trial, trial, trial! Speaking of trials, do it for you hair as well, and ESPECIALLY if you’re getting a spray tan (capitals for EMPHASIS).
There’s nothing worse than seeing a puzzled look on the face of the groom because he doesn’t recognise the woman in white walking down the aisle. So as your self-designated Life Boss, I advise you to have fun with your look, but not the day of the wedding. The world won’t end if you don’t look perfect when you tie the knot, but wouldn’t it be dapper to have one less thing to stress about? (Yes.)
