We have a not so secret love affair with all things ikat! It’s been an all round favourite for the last few years, popping up on fashion runways, as home ware textiles, crockery and much much more. We can even remember picking up an bikini at H&M on our travels many moons ago in a funky ikat print!

Not only is ikat fabric beautiful and colourful, the technique its self is a very ancient one and very detailed!

Ikat is an ancient Indonesian binding technique, similar to tie dye, a binding is applied to particular threads in order to resist dye and therefore create a pattern once the fabric is coloured. Traditional ikat cottons were often dyed with patterns that represented village life and the beliefs of the village people.

The slightly blurred patterns are signature to the ikat technique and ensure that each print is unique. The threads are not woven into cloth until they have been bound and dyed, making the ikat craft a very distinctive process.
