Trust Ibiza to spawn one of Australia’s best design imports. At the time of travelling to the party island Alice McCall was a successful London stylist working with the likes of Marianne Faithful, Blondie and Destiny’s child, that was until she met Sarah Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton of Sass and Bide.
Invited back to Australia to take on the role of designer, it must be with some oddity that her own label launched at Fashion Week in 2004 if not directly, still in some way competes with the same label that recruited her and to date has only gone from strength to strength.
Featuring pretty, flowing dresses in rainbow colours of dove blue, fushia, tangerine. violet and gold; Alice McCall drew inspiration from Hungarian dress to create intricately embroidered prints further embellished with gemstone resin beading and pretty laser cut mirrored earrings.
If you’ll compare fashion collections to band’s EP’s, you’ll generally find there’s a few hit songs and half a dozen maybe not so mind blowing additions but with Alice McCalls ‘Babookshka’ collection this fashion week each and every heavily hand worked piece would take pride of place in anyone’s robe.
