Titled ‘Fractured Appearance’ and inspired by a palette of colours reminiscent of the ocean, Gary Bigeni sent out a collection full of must-have separates on day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia earlier today. As well as cobalt and other various shades of blues, greens and turquoise, saffron – a deep golden yellow – and beige were also spectacularly used throughout.
Playing with texture, the collection featured knitted jumpers worn over sheer georgette blouses (featuring ingenious leather cuffs) which were then paired with silk trousers, leather trimmed pencil skirts, sleek jersey tops and cuffed shorts. Moving slightly away from the use of draping used so prominently in past collections, strong tailored pieces became the focus with sharp blazers, slick pencil skirts and masculine pants on display.
The use of prints were also heavily in favour with squares, circles and zig zags in colourful abundance which in turn added an almost Missoni feel – particularly with the bright zig zag knits – to the collection.
Breaking up the seemingly tri-colour theme of saffron, neutrals and cobalt was all-important black, with several halterneck dresses, jackets and pencil skirts (all featuring panels of leather) featured as well as a lovely and unexpected pop of orange.
Collaborating with Tim Gunn for the shoes once again saw various chrome heeled shoes with ankle straps perfectly carrying the neutral and blue theme throughout as well as thick leather obi belts which cinched in many a look and was another stand-out accessory featured.
All in all a seriously strong and highly covetable collection which had many in the front row (me included) sighing and constantly mentally adding to our wardrobes.
