BWA chatted to designer Brooke Daniels who designs the label of the same name on what inspires her creatively and her latest collection. Shop Brooke Daniels here.
Love your latest model Sarah Lorimer! What was your casting inspiration?
When the collection was designed, Bec and I had completely fallen in love with Rosie Huntington-Smith. Sarah had recently been the face of Leona Edminson, and a lot of her previous work did not obviously resonate with our aesthetic…but she just had such grace, perfect measurements, and that incredible jawline. She was the only girl we called in, and we knew she was the one as soon as we laid eyes on her. She is a lovely, smart, beautiful girl and we are proud to have worked with her.
Describe the essence of the latest collection?
Our latest collection embodies chic simplicity. It is glamorous, yet flattering and wearable.
What was the inspiration behind the collection?
Our summer collection is a fusion of European resort wear and 1970’s glamour. We always and only create flattering pieces foremost, but we ensure there is a striking element of new design concept.
Top tips to accessorising with your pieces?
We always recommend simple styling. Given that our items are highly contouring, we feel that the focus should be on how our dresses accentuate and highlight the body. We recommend simple cuffs, rings and cinch belts so that the ensemble is not too crammed.
Who is the Brooke Daniels girl?
The Brooke Daniels girl is confident & fun, with an eye for classic lines, rich colouring, & high quality fabrics. She knows how to look her best and what suits her and isn’t scared to buy online.
What are the key trends for BWA readers to pick up this coming season?
The key trends this season are colour blocking, modern nautical pieces, bright whites matched with metallic accessories. I also love oversized playsuits and tailored dresses pulled in tight with sashes.
The piece that best sums up the entire collection?
Our key piece is the Splice Lucy Dress and it is the hero style of our collection.
It has a tailored plunging white bodice attached to a navy tulip skirt and is brightened with an orange cotton sash. It is tailored, sexy and lady like at the same time. We think it is our best dress design yet!
What is the one item you cannot leave the house without?
Sunglasses! My day outfits are absolutely incomplete without them, and they make you feel far better looking than you sometimes are.
What does style mean to you?
Style is the outer representation of our inner selves.
Do you have any advice for up and coming designers?
Honestly. Start in retail. So much of what I learnt came from learning about the female form, understanding budgets – the commercial aim of fashion. Make some simple designs, get feedback, then build slowly and carefully.
Finally- if you could have breakfast with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
Gianni Versace. I want to talk to him about how wonderful the female body is, and all the fabulous innovations in his designs that he came up with to make women look unbelievable. He designed to make the wearer look beautiful and I find that so inspiring.
