The tension was palpable the moment we stepped out of the cab in Sydney’s Kings Cross yesterday evening to attend the highly publicized event to celebrate the launch of the Kardashian Collection handbags, available exclusively in Australia. The Kardashian sisters are making in store appearances today in David Jones which reportedly had die hard fans camping out over night (for a full list of where and when head here.)
Tight, gruff security and a police envoy were an early tell as to the bedlam that was yet to erupt. Paparazzo with their telephoto lenses camped eagerly across the street at an unsuspecting bar, and camera crews perched awkwardly from hastily hired hotel rooms above the Hugo’s balcony.
The photographers in the pit get briefed on numerous occasions, and attendees without sufficient photo id are ushered away at the second wait point to have your name checked off the list. The security however, is not as unnecessary as one might think, with over 11 million twitter followers, Kim Kardashian is sure to have a few crazed fans in the mix.
As we head up the stairs we are greeted by the sight of the surprisingly chic winter collection from the Kardashian Handbag Collection and cocktails, both a “Kim” and a “Khloe”.
It seems the gravitational pull of whatever it is that makes the Kardashian star shine so bright is irresistible to young and old, men and women and celebrities alike. People clamored at the edge of the balcony to wait for the arrival of the sisters and Khloe’s husband Lamar Odom. A two hour wait ensued.
As their black SUV’s pulled up, police furiously gestured at paparazzi and the public trying to grab that little bit of stardom for their own. Glamorous and dressed to the nines, the sisters emerged.
Although there are a lot of haters out there, my wildly optimistic belief in love leads me to believe Kim- she looked fabulous as always, yet emotionally exhausted. Still, the girls took their time to chat to their die hard fans out front before hitting the red carpet.
The 40 mins it took Kim to repeat her spiel about Australia left those in the balcony practically wringing their hands in anticipation. The women next to us fanatically scream “Kim…Lamar….Khloe” as they are ushered by their handlers up the stairs and straight to the back of the bar. In good spirit, Kim and Khloe take photos with the party goers, the delicious food keeps coming and drinks are flowing.
There is a reason that the Kardashian clan resonates so strongly with so many, and perhaps it is their ironic representation of two ends of the spectrum- fame, money and glamour are juxtaposed regularly with the nuances of family life, which are somehow both monumentally annoying yet endearing. Plus who wouldn’t want to own an entire walk in wardrobe comprised entirely of Louboutins?
